SAVE THE BALTIC

Water for Life Our goal is to save the Baltic Sea and its tributaries. By partnering with you, we see opportunities to get our message (or a partnership with you would give us the opportunity to get our message) and to make people aware of life beneath the surface. Thanks to this you could make an active choice to support biodiversity and living water.

Polessk-Gusev. This shows Expressen underwater camera truth about the environmental disaster in Kaliningrad – only 30 mil from the Swedish coast.
A slurry of human excrement, sanitary towels, oils and toxins from nearly one million people rapids daily from the newly constructed treatment plants and poisons the Baltic Sea.
This is a part of your bathing in summer.

It smells musty.

The river is covered with a thick layer which can not be identified. Sometimes we see air bubbles come up. It is hard to imagine that the fish swam here just a few years ago, when the old treatment plant from former Germany still received the city’s wastewater.
Can overflow with feces
The people who live here in Polessk, to the north by the Curonian Lagoon, says that the river can overflow with feces and fats. The stench can become unbearable when the treatment plant depletes all unfiltered into the river.
– When the wind is blowing against us, we must close all windows to avoid the shit smell, says Anna Smirnova, 73, pensioner, who lives nearby.
The new treatment plant, which was completed in 2009, just will not work, says the anti-corruption organization Transparency International in a new frightening report. Extremely high levels of oil, ammonium and phosphorus were measured at the outlets.
”Does not work at all”
– This indicates that the plant in Polessk not work at all. It is not useful. What we have built with taxpayers’ money – we try to find out through our project, says Roman Romanovskij, project manager for the report.

Despite years of international requirements has so far only five of the seventeen treatment plants built. But only one works fine. The rest will fail.

Another sewage treatment plants that do not pass it in Gusjev further east, which was commissioned in 2013. The EU has invested more than 30 million on the project to clean wastewater from almost 30 000 inhabitants. From plant outlet, we see feces drained right out of a local river, which later leads out into the Baltic Sea. It smells bad and looks terribly out. Further up we napkins, bottles and other waste lying on the ground around the drain pipe. Here was the oil content of the so-called purified water is 3800 times higher than the permissible. The report compares it with pouring pure gasoline in the river.
Environmental Protection Agency Linda Gårdstam, Head of Unit for guidance on environmentally hazardous activities, have looked at the levels of the water.
– They are much higher than emissions from Swedish sewage works, she says, and mentions specifically the levels of phosphorus and nitrogen significantly higher than what is allowed in Sweden.

These two substances contribute most to the eutrophication of the Baltic most serious environmental problems that threaten including cod and mussels. It also causes the severe algae blooms during late summer is visible as a thick mat of algae on the water surface. The cyanobacteria that algae form is can be dangerous for dogs who like to swim and drink the water.
Underwater camera shows how dirty it is in the water outside the plant.
Functional treatment plant removes 90 percent of phosphorus and nitrogen by biological and chemical treatment of wastewater. But Kaliningrad lack of functioning such makes it annually released 300 tons of phosphorus, almost as much as the whole of Sweden releases.

Transparency International suspects that the treatment plants that fail the examination may be jerry-building.
– We have checked how well it cleans the water and we have a suspicion that you may not have finished building something there. If we had built everything to do had the treatment plant released clean water, says Roman Romanovskij on Transparency.

Politically sensitive issue
The Regional Prosecutor’s Office and Vladimir Putin’s representative in the county has taken note of the report, but so far nothing has happened.
The issue is politically sensitive to Kaliningrad, to be the host city for the World Cup 2018. When we film in Gusjev an upset to the front, which claims to be the plant’s director. He demands that we stop filming, even though we are in a public place. Gusjevs treatment plant was built and put into operation during the time that Kaliningrad’s current governor Nikolai Tsukanov served as a city councilor. When we reach the governor on the phone, he puts on. His press secretary Larisa Pelyakova neither want to arrange a meeting or an interview by phone.

– He is outside the Kaliningrad region, she says.
In fact, the governor of Gusjev the day. On his Facebook page, he puts up pictures that show when he visits a kindergarten building.
We also contacts the deputy mayor Artur Krupin to ask why the Kaliningrad do not take better responsibility for the Baltic Sea, but he does not want to talk to us. We also asked the questions on email via Press Staff, with no response.

The people who lived their lives on this side of the Baltic Sea coast has no hope to see again the fish in the river. They feel that there is something to do against those in power.
During our visit to Polessk we see what really is the only protection between the wastewater and the Baltic Sea looming 1.5 kilometers away: A sloppily assembled barrier placed in the stream.
– We often joke that this is the treatment plant, says Roman Romanovskij at Transparency International.
